Text Size controls Normal font sizeMedium font sizeLarge font size PrintEmail

Each year in Alzheimer research brings new revelations about the causes of and potential treatments for this devastating disease that affects as many as 5.3 million Americans and 35 million individuals worldwide. While Alzheimer’s disease was first identified more than 100 years ago, only in the last 25 years has the disease been a focus of significant attention by the scientific community. In that time, the breadth and depth of research conducted to better understand and ultimately slow or prevent the disease has been remarkable.

The discoveries made in 2008 were no exception.  As a result of these discoveries, scientists have a stronger foothold on methods for early detection, biological and lifestyle risk factors that may contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s disease, and therapies that hold promise for improved treatments.

2008: The Year in Alzheimer Science explores the multitude of discoveries made by scientists across the globe who are united in their efforts to combat Alzheimer’s and improve the lives of people with the disease. It also describes the role of the Alzheimer’s Association in nurturing research and the ways the Association has touched individual researchers’ lives through its International Research Grant Program.
